Chapter Fifteen

Michelle’s t-Shirt quilt was a sight to behold, all said and done. She’d taken the back from every sports t-shirt she’d been issued in high school, and she’d made a big twelve foot by twelve foot blanket that was super soft and would be pretty comfy once she took it off the wall.

For now, it hung proudly displayed behind the TV in the living room. The full moon cast enough light through the south window that he could read the numbers and GARCIA on the backs.

“Brett, is that you?” Michelle came creeping out of her room, phone in one hand and handgun in the other.

“Yeah,” Brett said.

“It’s one in the morning.” Michelle turned the phone’s flashlight on to examine him.

“Late night with some friends,” Brett said.

“Okay.” Michelle turned around and walked back into her bedroom. “Good night.”

Brett padded across the living room toward his room, careful not to step too loudly and wake up Ashley. He paused in front of the window, watching the moon rise over the woods. A thin veil of dark clouds blew across it, almost like a flock of birds.

He yawned and went on in to sleep in his own bed. He could wait until morning to sort out the whys and the what-nows of what he’d just done. Right now, he was too tired to even bother checking his phone.

He woke up to Ashley squalling, followed by banging on the door. Loud, urgent banging.

“Fuck, fuck, fuck!” Michelle was bounding across the floor outside Brett’s bedroom. “Coming!”

Brett sat up in bed. For a second, the world was a very blurry and confusing place, and then he remembered he fucked Gabe Yates last night. Oh, no, he had fucked Gabe Yates.

A door opened. “Hello?” she said.

“Hi, my name is Agent Walker. I’m from the bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, and Tobacco and I need to speak to the Garcia family.” It took a second for Brett to match the face to the voice.

“Agent...hold on,” Michelle said. “Aren’t you one of our...renters, okay, come on in, agent.”

Footsteps coming through the living room.

Brett’s brain finally went into “oh shit” mode. He sprang out of bed and threw a flannel and some jeans on over his nudity.

“Brett!” Michelle banged on his door. “There’s a lady here from the FBI?”

“ATF,” Rose said. “I’m sorry for the surprise. I’ve been trying to call him.”

“He got in real late last night,” Michelle said. “Brett!”

“I’m coming!” Brett opened his door halfway through buttoning his shirt. “Sorry,” he said. “I was out with a friend and…”

“Yes, and you didn’t pick up your phone and we thought you’d been murdered,” Rose said. “Great job.”

“Oh, shit.” Brett felt his face go pale. “I... I’m sorry…”

“Why don’t you come out and have a seat with me,” Rose said. “We brought coffee.”

As she said that, it occurred to Brett that Gabe was in his living room in his uniform.

“What the fuck?” Brett said. “What…”

“There was another fire last night,” Rose said.

“Here,” Gabe said, handing Brett a cup of coffee.

“Thanks.” Brett tried to look at him without, you know, actually looking at him.
